It is a very confused picture I'm afraid.

The tree outline has now been put into a pdf file: <<walker/calvert>>

Not least of our problems has been indentifying James CALVERT.

As at March 2017 we still have not traced his baptism, nor discovered his parents.
According to his age as noted when he died he was born between March 1782 and March 1783.
When he married in 1809 he was a batchelor living at Scaleby.

A number of points do suggest that he was from the Hethersgill area of Kirklinton parish, and this page concerns itself with the CALVERT families who lived around there.

The most likely option seemed to be that James CALVERT was born between March 1782 and March 1783 (and for some reason the baptism not recorded) to parents John CALVERT and Jane BOWES who married on October 15th 1774 at Kirklinton.  (The IGI records their ages as being 36 and 28).

BUT as at April 2017 we know that this was not the case. John CALVERT's will of 1810 mentions his wife Jane, and their children Thomas and Elizabeth whom we knew about, and also another son William - but no James.  The research below is left on-line for the moment and will hopefully be of help to other researchers.  If anyone does know James' CALVERT's background do please be in touch!

Although the couple were married at Kirklinton Parish Church their children's births are recorded in the Quaker Registers.
Thomas was the first born, at Rigghead on July 1st 1781, and the next child recorded is Elizabeth, also at Rigghead,on March 8th 1784.
Full details of this family, and of other Kirklinton CALVERT families, are given below.

The IGI has good records for the family up until 1740, but then there is mostly a gap, only partly filled by the Quaker records, until the parish records resume with James's marriage in 1809.

Abigail IRWIN of Hallfoot married Robert WALKER at Kirklinton in 1802.
At the marriage of Abigail's brother Walter IRWIN in 1801 there is a witness John CALVERT Kirklinton yeoman.

Is this John the John CALVERT who married Jane BOWES in 1774, dying as a Quaker on March 28th 1810 aged 74?  His abode is given in the Society of Friends register as Rigghead in Kirklinton. He was buried on March 30th 1810 at Megshill (near Hetherside) on the same day as his daughter Elizabeth who had died a day earlier than her father.  (The full details are set out below.}
John's widow Jane was buried at Megshill in 1834.  She was 88 years old.

The earliest mentions of the family at Kirklinton are included in an LDS submission, not yet checked, by Jay Dean Clark:

William  CALVERT and wife Mary had a son William CALVERT chr. Aug. 17th 1662 at Kirklinton.
William CALVERT and wife Mary had a son John CALVERT b.c 1666.

(Sometimes it is possible to follow a line down through the generations,  but the many gaps here make this very problematical)

Mary CALVERT's burial is given as January 27th 1698/99.
William CALVERT's burial is given as January 25th 1704/05.

John CALVERT, bc. 1666 had a son GEORGE CALVERT, chr. March 16th 1691/92

The IGI, transcripts of the Kirklinton registers c. 1706 to 1732, using PR 156/2 plus the BTs and Carlisle Diocese Marriage Licences/Bond are later sources:

To Edward CALVERT - a son June 3rd 1665 (IGI)  (JDC says this was Robert, to parents Edward and Jane, of Walton!
-also that Margaret, below, was also their daughter b.c. 1659, and bur. Feb. 2nd 1732/33 at Scaleby)

Margaret CALVERT married Walter PALMER on February 2nd 1675. (IGI)

To Thomas CALVERT (no marriage traced) three children baptised: (IGI)

Jane Sept. 1667 (? married William HETHERINGTON on July 16th 1705)
                     - we know one of the HETHERINTON families was living at Righead at this time
Sibilla July 10th 1670
Mary November 18th 1676 (? maried David GRAHAM on Nov. 28th 1707)

William CAVERT (no birth nor marriage traced) is listed as having four children baptised (IGI)

Blench Oct. 28th 1694 (? married John LAMB, June 13th 1715)
Thomas January 6th 1706 (abode Ford   Hall in the transcripts)
Mary Sept. 29th 1708 (abode Foordhall in the transcripts)
Edward May 9th 1711 (abode Foordhall in the transcripts)

Jay Dean Clark has Edward's date as May 9th 1712, but he also has other information - that the parents were William CALVERT  and Mary NICHOL, and that the abode was Iron Hall  rather than the transcripts' Foordhall.

Burial of Mary, daughter of William CALVERT of Righead on Dec. 26th 1713 (Register and BT)
Burial of a child of William CALVART of Righead on Feb. 17th 1716/17 (Register, not BT)

Burial of William CALVERT of Righead in Hethersgill on March 5th 1713/14 (Register and BT)

George CALVERT married Jane LITTLE on August 9th 1695 at Kirklinton (IGI, which also mentions Arthuret)

Two children chr. to father George: (IGI)

John April 9th 1696
Jannett April 2nd 1697

John CALVERT married Elizabeth GRAHAM in 1699 (M057992)

Three children chr. to father John:

Mary Dec. 4th 1703 (IGI)
John April 3rd 1706 to father John at Burnside (1706 - 32 Transcripts)

Burial of John CALVERT of Burnside in Hethersgill, May 8th 1721 (Register and BT)

Burial of Mary CALVERT of Burnside, July 31st 1724 (Register)

George CALVERT married Jane GRAHAM on October 12th or 28th or 29th 1705 (Notes 4 and BT and M057992)

Four children chr. to father George:  (the transcripts give the abode as Holmfoot)

George Nov. 6th 1706 (died Aug. 4th 1706)
Jane Nov. 30th 1707
Margaret March 12th 1709/10
Jan(e)t January 6th 1711/12

Jane CALVERT (not identified) married Richard MURRAY on November 28th 1717 (IGI)

Added March 2017: IGI C02232-8 has baptism 25 April 1705 of John CALVERT to father William.
This gives us three John CALVERT baptisms in 1705-6!

John CALVERT (which?) of Righead married Mary IRWIN of Burnside on November 14th 1725 by Licence - the above information from Bond 12 November 1725.
(no children's births listed, but their burials are below)

(Note: rechecked in March 2017 - the Bond not listed with others which are on-line for this period: but IGI M05799-3 does have the marriage, dated November 1725 at Kirk-Linton)

It is to this couple that, as at March 2017, I am inclined to put the John CALVERT born c. 1737 and who died in 1810.
I am thinking he married Jane BOWES in 1774 - listed below

Thomas CALVERT married Jane BULMAN (below) on October 6th 1731 by Banns - Register and BT.

Five children baptised to father Thomas: (C057991/2)

Mary Nov. 29th 1731 - transcriptions add at Righead (Reg. and BT)
William March 10th 1733
Mary February 6th 1736
Dinah Feb. 6th 1738 (married John GRAHAM on May 27th 1765)
Note: a Dinah GRAHAM was one of the Witnesses at the Quaker birth registration
of Isaac Bond   CALVERT in 1793 to parents John and Sarah.
Sibyl Jan. 4th 1740

- Is this the Jane of  the Gerhard transcriptions: Jane CALVERT widow of
Hethergillanen, buried on December 10th 1783 at Kirklinton?

John CALVERT of Righead had a son Joseph buried the 28th of the 1st month 1758 (Quaker records)

John CALVERT of Sikehead  had a son Thomas, born 11th day of the 3rd Month 1763. (Quaker record)
"The said" John CALVERT of Sikehead had a son William, born 11th day of the 3rd Month 1768 (sic) (Quaker record)
Sarah CALVERT wife of John CALVERT of Sikehead deceased and was buried the 17th day of the 6th month 1770 (Quaker record)

George CALVERT married Susan WALTON on August 2nd 1767 and the IGI notes one child:

Mary chr. May 29th 1774

John CALVERT of Righead deceased and was buried the 18th day of the ninth month 1775 (Quaker record)
Thomas CALVERT, son to Jno CALVERT of Righead was buried on the 15th day of the 9th month 1776 (Quaker record)
Mary CALVERT of Rigghead in Hethersgill deceased and was buried the 16th day of the 2nd month 1777 (Quaker record)

John CALVERT (not yet identified) married Jane BOWES on October 15th 1774 (IGI)
(The IGI records their ages as being 36 and 28)
Both were buried in the Quaker burial ground Megshill, John in 1810, Jane not till 1834 when she was aged 88.
Note: the couple would appear to have lived on neighbouring farms, Rigghead and Hall Hills.

(Carlisle Archives have documents referring to this John CALVERT:

1. Attornment by John Calvert of Rigghead, Kirklinton, yeoman (by direction of John Linnex) to John Stamper of Irthington clerk, of Sykehead farm, Kirklinton, to be held of Stamper as his tenant D HA/2/51 1787

(To attorn was to accept a tenancy under a new landlord.   Clerk = cleric.)

2. Letter from John Calvert of Rigghead to John Mitchison of Rickergate concerning 'the children money' D HA/2/62 1798

The Quakers records show three children to John and Jane:

Thomas CALVERT, born July 1st 1781 at Righead - the witnesses were Margaret GRAHAM and Elizabeth BOWES
Elizabeth CALVERT, born March 8th 1784 at Rigghead - the witnesses were Mary MOFFIT senior and Mary MOFFIT junior. (see her burial details below)
Ann CALVERT, born Dec. 22nd 1788 at Rigghead - the witnesses were Elloner? HETHERINTON and Betty BOWES  (buried at Megshill on March 10th 1807,  aged 18, d. of John CALVERT of Righead - Quaker record)

Note also: on Nov. 30th 1784 Jane CALVERT and Mary MOFFET were the witnesses at the birth of a son Thomas at Rigghead to parents Joseph and Unity JACKSON - see footnote

The Quaker records also show two children to John and Sarah CALVERT
(John CALVERT mar. Sarah DOBSON at St Mary's Carlisle on 11 November 1792)

Isaac Bond, son, born August 20th 1793 at Hethersgill  - one of the witnesses was Dinah GRAHAM.
Sarah, born 1795 (details to be rechecked)

At the marriage of Abigail IRWIN's brother Walter IRWIN in 1801  a John CALVERT of Kirklinton yeoman was one of the witnesses.

Finally, from the Quaker records, two CALVERT deaths:

March 27th 1810 Elizabeth CALVERT aged 26 or Rigghead, daughter of Jno CALVERT - buried on March 30th at Megshill.
March 28th 1810 John CALVERT aged 74 of Rigghead - buried on March 30th at Megshill.

James CALVERT married Eleanor HOPE at Kirklinton on February 9th 1809 - witnesses Ann Jackson and John Hope.

Eleanor HOPE was born in 1790 to parents George HOPE of Cleugh Head and Mary BLENKINSOP.

Thomas CALVERT married Jane HOPE at Kirklinton on Dec. 8th 1813.

Thomas was born in 1781 at Rigghead (listed above).    Jane HOPE was bap. Oct. 14th 1787 at Irthington to father George HOPE (born 1757 at Irthington, son of Roger) and Mary CHAMBERS, who had married at Irthington on May 6th 1787.   (They also had a son John, bapt. Oct. 4th 1789).

They would appear to have had four children, John chr. Aug. 21st 1814, and Mary and Elizabeth both chr. Jan. 4th 1822, though Mary was two years older than her sister.  (George in not in the IGI.)  The family's fortunes can be traced in the later census returns:

1841 census: Hethersgill Village

Thomas CALVERT 55 farmer
Jane CALVERT 50
John CALVERT 25
George CALVERT 23
Mary CALVERT 20 (Margaret in the transcript)
Elizabeth CALVERT 18

1861 census: Hethersgill

Thomas CALVERT Head 79 Retired Farmer Kirklinton
Jane CALVERT Wife 73 Irthington
Mary CALVERT Daug. 40 unmarried Kirklinton
Elizabeth HOLLIDAY Daug. 38 Widow Kirklinton
Mary HOLLIDAY GdDaug. 6 Kirklinton.

John CALVERT Head 45 Farmer of 80 acres employing 2 men 1 boy
Ann CALVERT wife 35 Stapleton
+ 4 children and two servants.

A trade Directory for 1829 lists a Thomas CALVERT as a farmer at Kirklinton and Mannix and Whellan in 1847 have a Thomas CALVERT farmer at Hethersgill.

Footnote:  re the Quaker records from March and November 1784.  The interest lies in the fact that Jane CALVERT and Mary MOFFIT are named in both entries, the second time as witnesses to Joseph and Ann JACKSON's son Thomas's baptism.
We do know that a generation later, an Ann JACKSON was one of the witnesses at James CALVERT's marriage in 1809.

The Joseph JACKSON referred to was most likely baptised at Kirklinton on January22nd 1743 to father William. (LDS submission 7127810).  Brother Thomas had earlier been baptised there on Nov. 15th 1741.   I believe that this Thomas JACKSON - a nailor of Prior Rigg Hethersgill - married Catherine HOPE at Kirklinton in 1788 and that it was their daughter  Ann, born in 1789, who as Eleanor HOPE's cousin was one of the witnesses at her marriage to James CALVERT in 1809.

JANE BULMAN.

Jane BULMAN was chr. Oct. 16th 1704 to father John (IGI batch no. C057993, Kirklinton).
We know from batch no. M057993 that John BULMAN married Jannet ARMSTRONG on Feb. 24th 1695 at Kirklinton.

As well as daughter Jane, the 1706-32 transcripts give two other children:
Isabella chr. April 29th 1707  at Hethersgill
Hannah chr. June 18th 1710 at Hethersgill Loaning.

A generation later, in 1730/31, the records show that Roger BULMAN was a father in the parish, but his baptism has not been traced .

In case it is helpful, here also is a graphic summary of some of the CALVERT families of Kirklinton, revised April 2017
